The yanks have (had) The Hills, The City and Jersey Shore. Scripted ‘reality’ shows are TV gold in America and us Brits lap it up. I LOVED The Hills – “You know what you did”.
But here in the UK we’ve tried in vain to copy these successful US shows, with Brit adaptations, and they usually flop. Remember the British version of Laguna Beach? No, neither did I. I think it was called Living On The Edge, and it was duller than a plank of wood. And then there was the British version of My Sweet 16. The US version was annoying, but vaguely watchable and embarrassingly entertaining, but the Brit version was just annoying.
Well, that was all until a bunch not so bright, overly-tanned, surgery obsessed, lovable group of Essex guys and gals came into our lives. The Only Way Is Essex has proven that scripted reality British shows do work. I know it’s a bit of a silly show, but hey, so was The Hills, but it’s trash TV at its best. TOWIE is my new reality fix. If you don’t watch it, you really should check it out, it’s pretty reem (Essex slang for very good).
Following the huge success of the ITV reality show, other shows have jumped on the bandwagon. There’s a new show based in Chelsea starting in a couple weeks. But the one that I think will be the next best thing is MTV’s Geordie Shore. Yep, it’s like Jersey Shore, but based in Newcastle….
Make way for 8 loud and proud Geordie lads and lasses who promise to show you a summer you’ll never forget!
Inspired by the hit US phenomenon, Jersey Shore, the glamorous city of Newcastle becomes the latest stomping ground for this gang of tanned and buffed individuals, ready for 6 weeks of unadulterated partying toon-style.
Living in a gorgeous five star house complete with shared bedrooms, a shag-pile outhouse for ‘special visitors’ and a hot tub, MTV cameras will catch all the action as they work during the day for a promotions company and then get their tash on at night, at some of the most renowned hotspots on the Diamond Strip.
There’ll be tears, tantrums, drama and outrageous behaviour by the bucket-load… and that’s just from the boys!
Looks like a good must watch. Ohhhh I do love me a bit of trash TV.
